Science is hiding in your kitchen, backyard, and pencil case. With a few safe materials (and an adult nearby), you can explore chemistry, physics, and biology without a lab coat.

Safety first: Always work on a protected surface, wear eye protection when needed, keep hair tied back, and ask an adult to supervise experiments that involve heat, flames, sharp objects, or glass.

1) Volcano Eruption 🌋 (Acid–Base Reaction)

  • Materials: Baking soda, vinegar, small bottle/cup, dish soap (optional), food coloring (optional), tray.
  • Concept: Acid (vinegar) + base (baking soda) → carbon dioxide gas (fizz!).
  • Steps: Put 2–3 tsp baking soda in the bottle, add a drop of dish soap and food coloring, then pour in 1/4 cup vinegar and watch it erupt.

2) Dancing Raisins 🥤 (Buoyancy & Gas)

  • Materials: Clear soda water, glass, a few raisins.
  • Concept: CO₂ bubbles attach to raisins, increasing buoyancy so they rise; bubbles pop and they sink again.
  • Steps: Drop raisins into soda water and observe their up-and-down “dance.”

3) Homemade Lava Lamp 💡 (Density & Gas)

  • Materials: Clear bottle, vegetable oil, water, food coloring, effervescent tablet.
  • Concept: Oil is less dense than water; gas lifts colored water blobs upward.
  • Steps: Fill 2/3 with oil, 1/3 with water, color the water, then add tablet pieces and watch blobs rise and fall.

  • Materials: Shallow dish, milk, food coloring, dish soap, cotton swab.
  • Concept: Soap reduces surface tension and disrupts fat/protein bonds, swirling colors.
  • Steps: Add milk to dish, dot food coloring, touch surface with soapy swab—colors scatter dramatically.

5) The Egg in a Bottle 🥚 (Air Pressure – Adult Needed)

  • Materials: Peeled boiled egg, glass bottle with opening slightly smaller than egg, paper, lighter/matches (adult only).
  • Concept: Heated air expands; when the flame goes out, air cools and pressure drops, pushing the egg in.
  • Steps: Adult lights paper and drops into bottle. Quickly place egg on mouth of bottle. The egg gets “sucked” inside.

6) Rainbow in a Glass 🌈 (Density)

  • Materials: 4–5 cups, water, sugar, food coloring, spoon, tall clear glass.
  • Concept: Higher sugar concentration = higher density; denser layers sit below lighter layers.
  • Steps: Make colored sugar waters with 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 tbsp sugar per cup. Carefully layer from most dense to least using a spoon.

7) Static Balloon Power 🎈 (Electrostatics)

  • Materials: Balloon, tissue bits or running water from a thin tap stream.
  • Concept: Rubbing transfers electrons, giving the balloon a charge that attracts neutral objects.
  • Steps: Rub balloon on hair, bring near tissue bits or a thin water stream—watch them move toward the balloon.

8) Invisible Ink ✍️ (Oxidation & Heat)

  • Materials: Lemon juice, cotton swab, white paper, lamp/iron (adult assistance), optional baking soda + grape juice for variant.
  • Concept: Organic acids brown with heat; baking-soda ink reveals with pH indicator (grape juice).
  • Steps: Write with lemon juice, let dry. Gently warm paper to reveal message. (Adult should handle heat.)

  • Materials: Bowl of water, small paperclip, tissue.
  • Concept: Surface tension can support light objects when placed gently.
  • Steps: Place a small piece of tissue on water, set paperclip on tissue; tissue sinks, paperclip stays floating.

10) DIY Compass 🧭 (Magnetism)

  • Materials: Sewing needle, magnet, small piece of cork/foam, bowl of water.
  • Concept: Magnetized needle aligns with Earth’s magnetic field.
  • Steps: Stroke needle in one direction with a magnet ~30–40 times. Push needle through cork and float it—the needle points N–S.
