The One-Square-Metre World

Objective: Build observation, classification, measurement, and communication skills by studying one small place closely. Info: Choose one square metre of an accessible place, such as a yard, park, playground edge, balcony, hallway corner, or classroom area. Observe it without disturbing living things. Create a micro-world field report showing what you noticed, the patterns you found, and one question your observations raised. Younger students may focus on colours, shapes, textures, objects, or living things. Older students should include a simple counting or comparison method and explain the limits of their observations. Rules: - Study only one clearly identified square-metre area. - Observe safely and leave the area as you found it. - Include a title, a description of the location, at least five observations, one pattern or comparison, and one question for further study. - Any photos or drawings must be your own. - Do not include faces, exact home addresses, school identifiers, or private identifying information. - Submit exactly one file. Accepted submission formats: One PDF, Word document, JPG image, or PNG image. Judging criteria: - Care and detail of observation: 30% - Strength of pattern-finding or comparison: 25% - Clarity and organization: 20% - Originality of presentation: 15% - Safe and respectful field practice: 10%
