Homemade Lava Lamp
Create a colorful lava lamp using oil, water, food coloring and effervescent tablets
Students in their initial schooling stage frequently show interest in conducting this specific laboratory experiment. The Materials to make this simple activity are easy to obtain so anyone can create its vibrant and engaging results.
What you need
- Clear plastic bottle
- Vegetable oil
- Water
- Food coloring
- Effervescent tablet (like Alka-Seltzer)
Instructions
- Pour vegetable oil until it reaches about 3/4 of the bottle
- Add water to fill the remaining space, leaving some room at the top
- Add a few drops of food coloring to create your desired color
- Drop in an effervescent tablet and watch the bubbling action
- Observe the colorful bubbles rising and falling like a lava lamp
How it works
Oil and water don't mix due to different densities. The effervescent tablet creates carbon dioxide bubbles that carry colored water up through the oil, creating the lava lamp effect.
