Rainbow in a Jar

Subject: Chemistry | Grade: 2 | Time: 25-30 minutes

Observe how different liquids layer due to their density by creating a colorful rainbow effect in a clear container.

What you need

  • A tall clear glass or jar
  • Honey
  • Dish soap (colored)
  • Water mixed with food coloring
  • Vegetable oil
  • A spoon

How it works

Each liquid has a different density. Heavier (denser) liquids like honey sink to the bottom, while lighter liquids like oil float on top. This helps children understand that heavier does not always mean solid.
