Elephant Toothpaste

Create a large foamy explosion that demonstrates chemical reactions

Young students will find significant interest in this experimental process which demonstrates chemical reactions. The chemical produces such a large foamy explosion that resembles toothpaste designed for an elephant!

What you need

  • Plastic bottle
  • Hydrogen peroxide (3%)
  • Liquid dish soap
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Dry yeast
  • Warm water

Instructions

  1. Add hydrogen peroxide to a plastic bottle until it reaches about one third of its capacity
  2. Put several drops of dish soap into the bottle and use gentle motion to mix
  3. Add food coloring if desired for a colorful effect
  4. In a separate container, mix dry yeast with warm water
  5. Quickly pour the yeast mixture into the bottle and step back
  6. Watch as the foam erupts from the bottle like elephant toothpaste

How it works

The yeast acts as a catalyst, breaking down hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen gas. The soap traps the oxygen gas, creating the foamy eruption.
