Elephant Toothpaste
Create a large foamy explosion that demonstrates chemical reactions
Young students will find significant interest in this experimental process which demonstrates chemical reactions. The chemical produces such a large foamy explosion that resembles toothpaste designed for an elephant!
What you need
- Plastic bottle
- Hydrogen peroxide (3%)
- Liquid dish soap
- Food coloring (optional)
- Dry yeast
- Warm water
Instructions
- Add hydrogen peroxide to a plastic bottle until it reaches about one third of its capacity
- Put several drops of dish soap into the bottle and use gentle motion to mix
- Add food coloring if desired for a colorful effect
- In a separate container, mix dry yeast with warm water
- Quickly pour the yeast mixture into the bottle and step back
- Watch as the foam erupts from the bottle like elephant toothpaste
How it works
The yeast acts as a catalyst, breaking down hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen gas. The soap traps the oxygen gas, creating the foamy eruption.
