Balloon Lung Model

Help students understand how lungs and the diaphragm work together during breathing by creating a working respiratory system model.

What you need

• 1 clear plastic bottle (1-litre)
• 2 balloons (same size)
• 1 drinking straw
• 1 rubber band
• Scissors or utility knife (used by an adult)
• Modeling clay or tape
• Plastic wrap or extra balloon

How it works

Pulling the bottom balloon mimics diaphragm contraction, creating space inside the chest cavity (the bottle) and lowering air pressure. Air enters the straw and inflates the inner balloon (lung). This is how we breathe!
