Floating Egg Experiment

Subject: science | Grade: 1 | Time: 10 minutes

Learn about density by making an egg float

Through this experiment students learn about density and buoyancy by examining how eggs interact with water.

What you need

  • A glass of water
  • Salt
  • An egg

Instructions

  1. Fill a glass with water
  2. Carefully drop the egg into the water and observe that it sinks
  3. Remove the egg and add salt to the water
  4. Stir the salt until it completely dissolves
  5. Place the egg back in the saltwater and watch it float

How it works

Adding salt increases the density of the water. When the water becomes denser than the egg, the egg floats on the surface due to buoyancy.
